By definition, gangsters are evil individuals. They’re criminals, hoodlums, and assassins. The best new gangster movies immerse us in their universes. Even if they do terrible things, it’s difficult not to be attracted to them. Now and then, we all enjoy gazing into the void. Seeing a film that dramatizes what it’s like to live and work in the violent criminal underground has a certain allure that you can’t ignore. Movies about gangsters and the mafia of all kinds have been released with amazing constancy since Francis Ford Coppola’s classic The Godfather rocked the world. Every year, at least a couple more current new gangster movies are released. Actors enjoy portraying these characters, as seen in a slew of recent new mafia movies.

The latest new gangster movies are on the list below.

20- The Irishman

Release date: 2019 (USA)

Director: Martin Scorsese

Adapted from: I Heard You Paint Houses

Awards: Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Acting Ensemble, MORE

Producers: Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Randall Emmett, MORE

Nominations: Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Acting Ensemble, MORE

Why: The Irishman is one of the new gangster movies of the decade, one of the finest films of Martin Scorsese, one of the finest films ever made. I feel like there’s so much to say about this film but no words could ever capture the brilliance of this film.

I have seen it twice now and I must say feelings towards certain scenes change as you watch it again. I could now appreciate the final hour of the film much more which communicates the futility and bleakness of the inevitable fate that is knocking right at the door of these men.

I just fell in love with the film. Martin Scorsese made a film with a dream team of Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel among others. The performances are just perfect, to be honest. There is nothing wrong with any of the performances. I couldn’t pinpoint a single scene where I felt a particular performance was not great.

The Irishman - New Gangster Movies

In 1950s Philadelphia, Sheeran works as a union delivery truck driver, and he begins to sell part of the contents of his shipments to local criminal Skinny Razor, a member of the Philadelphia crime family led by Angelo Bruno.

Sheeran’s employer accuses him of stealing, but after Sheeran refuses to tell the judge who his clients are, union lawyer Bill Bufalino has the case dropped. Bill introduces Sheeran to Russell Bufalino, the head of the Northeastern Pennsylvania mafia family.

Sheeran begins painting houses, a euphemism for contract killing, for Russell and other members of the South Philadelphia mafia.

Director: Clark Duke

Music by: The Flaming Lips Alexander Taylor Matthew James

Based on: Arkansas; by John Brandon

Production companies: Hercules Film Fund; Rhea Films; Storyboard Media; Sprockfeller Pictures; Don Kee Productions; Media Finance Capital

Why: I enjoyed these New Gangster Movies. The Devendra Banhart/Flaming Lips soundtrack also really enhanced the film, giving it a Southern Surrealist feel. I highly recommend this film. It has some definite great Southern dialog, one of my favorites, “I didn’t get this smart on accident.”

Plot: Kyle Ribb, a drug dealer who is part of a loose criminal organization led by a man named Frog, is “promoted” to move goods wholesale in Arkansas. Kyle and his new buddy, Swin Horn, meet Bright, a Frog-affiliated park warden. He says that Kyle and Swin will work under his supervision, residing on the park grounds under the guise of park employees while trafficking drugs across the southern United States.

Arkansas - New Gangster Movies

Swin started to date Johnna, a nurse who introduces him to a curio shop owner who is strange. Kyle and Swin are given orders to accomplish a deal in Castor, Louisiana, where they deliver merchandise to a chatty Greek man by a woman named “Her.” Nick, his grandson, joins them on their journey back to Arkansas. In a battle over Nick’s gun, he tackles Bright in his home and subsequently tortures him for his hoard of cash, but both are slain. Kyle and Swin bury the remains, believing they will be accused if Frog’s organization finds out what occurred. Kyle goes back to Castor and kills the elderly Greek.

Writers: Tiller Russell(written for the screen by)David Kushner(based on the article “Dead End on Silk Road: Internet Crime Kingpin Ross Ulbricht’s Big Fall” by)

Stars: Nick RobinsonJennifer YunJimmi Simpson

Why: The Silk Road is one of the New Gangster Movies by Tiller Russell with an Excellent, fairly accurate, assessment of what took place, and the Strong acting of Nick RobinsonJennifer YunJimmi Simpson makes it more interesting. I have seen it twice now and I must say feelings towards certain scenes change as you watch it again. The film does a good job of making the viewer understand Ulbricht’s motives.

Director: George Gallo

Music composed by: Aldo Shllaku

Story by: Samuel Bartlett

Produced by: Richard Salvatore; David E. Ornston; Nate Adams

Why: Action-packed, full of suspense, I love how the movie ends these new gangster movies rocked! It was full of action, and although there were a few plot holes, it was a lot better than a lot of these other flicks out right now. It’s a solid viewing once you get past the initial shock. It’s a thumbs up for me!

vanquish - New Gangster Movies

Victoria discovers that at every stop point she makes throughout the night, strange villains from her past assault her. Meanwhile, a cop breaks into Damon’s house and is killed by Damon.

16- Nobody

Release date: March 26, 2021 (USA)

Director: Ilya Naishuller

Box office: 57.5 million USD

Budget: 16 million USD

Music composed by: David Buckley

Producers: Bob Odenkirk, David Leitch, Kelly McCormick, Marc Provissiero, Braden Aftergood

Why:  Fairly standard action premise, but executed well and the low budget lends to the feel of the film. Odenkirk is a surprisingly compelling action lead, and the writing doesn’t feel cheesy or cliched considering the subject material.

It’s not cookie-cutter, the hero is fallible and isn’t invincible by any means, the family angle isn’t sappy or distracting, and we get to see Christopher Lloyd dual-wielding shotguns. This is what fun activity is supposed to be, and it’s miles ahead of other new gangster movies that are over-stylized or laser-focused on one aspect.

It does everything it tries to do VERY well, and the pacing is near flawless in my estimation. You’re not getting Citizen Kane, you’re getting exactly what you want by watching this type of film and I honestly hope we see a sequel.

Nobody - New Gangster Movies

Plot:: Emmy Award winner Hutch Mansell is played by Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, The Post, Nebraska), an underappreciated and neglected father and a husband who takes life’s indignities in stride and never complains.

He’s a nobody. Hutch refuses to defend himself or his family when two burglars sneak into his suburban home one night, seeking to avoid major violence. Blake (Gage Munroe, The Shack) is unsatisfied with him, and Becca (Connie Nielsen, Wonder Woman) appears to be drifting away from him.

Hutch’s long-simmering rage is reawakened by the incident’s aftermath, which leads him on a deadly path that reveals dark secrets and dangerous skills. In a whirlwind of punches, gunfire, and squealing tires, Hutch must save his family from a ruthless antagonist (renowned Russian actor Aleksey Serebryakov, Amazon’s McMafia) while assuring that he’ll never be regarded as an anybody again.

15- Wrath of Man

Director: Guy Ritchie

Distributed by: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Miramax, Lionsgate Films

Why: The movie is so good with a wonderful selection of characters, and has a unique way of unfolding events divided into nicely titled chapters. Jason has always been one of my favorite actors since childhood, was very impressive and convincing in the new gangster movies. Beautiful dialogues that make a scene feel gritty and suspenseful. Guy Ritchie did a beautiful job directing this one and deserves an award. Highly recommend this for the John Wick and Nobody fans.

the wrath of man

Plot: A new security guard on a cash truck, mysterious and wild-eyed, impresses his coworkers when he unleashes precision talents during a heist. 14- In Bruges

Director: Martin McDonagh

Box office: 34.5 million USD

Music by: Carter Burwell

Budget: $15 million

Distributed by: Focus Features, Universal Pictures, Film4 Productions, Blueprint Pictures

Why: The only new gangster movies watch whenever I want to have quality alone time and still feel fresh. The background score by Curt Burwell gives you goosebumps. It’s funny, violent, unexpected, and unpredictable. Gleason and Farrell are at their best, refreshingly with their accents.

The film is offensive on many levels / so plenty of whining material for the snowflakes. The ending is so dramatic and meaningful that you will end up loving and respecting every character. Just Brilliant!

In Bruges - New mafia Movies

 13-  Point Break 1991

Director: Kathryn Bigelow

Music by: Mark Isham

Story by: Rick King; W. Peter Iliff

Box office: $83.5 million

Distributed by: Warner Bros. Pictures, 20th Century Studios, Pathé

Why: Patrick Swayze is very convincing and has good cast choices in supporting roles like John C McGinley and Gary Busey. I think it is also a great performance from Keanu Reeves and the role was born for him I reckon. I feel the film is a strong blend of action and crime thriller.

Watched it in full for the first time last week and realized they were the ‘Ex-presidents’. Glued to the new gangster movies, and loved the action, chemistry, dialogue, and quotes. Inspired me to try surfing yesterday as well — a gem of a film. Try not to get too obsessed. Watch and Let GO, Brah!

Release date: April 5, 1960 (United Kingdom)

Director: Basil Dearden

Adapted from: The League of Gentlemen

Music by: Philip Green

Budget: £192,000

Distributed by: British Lion Films

Why: An enjoyable effort in the Ealing vein, more specifically in the black comic vein of “Kind Hearts and Coronets” or “The Naked Truth”, with fairly upper-class individuals gleefully straying from the straight and narrow. The fact that one is encouraged to sympathize with what is essentially a band of upper-class soldiers succumbing to criminality is a mark of the new gangster movies whimsical success. The ex-soldiers wit, friendship, and subtle pathos are expertly crafted; stranded in peacetime, the planned theft allows some scope for their abilities.

The League of Gentlemen 1960 - New Gangster Movies

Plot: Lieutenant Colonel Hyde, who has been forced to retire, enlists the help of seven other dissatisfied ex-soldiers for a special mission. Each man has a dark past, is cash-strapped, and is a service-trained specialist in his field. Why: An exciting fast-tracked new gangster movies noir, this. It is interesting in that it shows the lead-up to the heist of $2 million from a racetrack from the point of view of each gang member. It is a finely tuned operation planned down to the last detail by the gang leader expertly portrayed by Sterling Hayden. Finely tuned that is except that he didn’t include the ” what if’s”. What if there,’s a gkit. What if something goes wrong?

The Killing 1956

Plot: Johnny Clay has put together a five-man gang, including two insiders, to pull off a $2 million theft at Lansdowne Racetrack, with the proceeds split five ways after expenditures. Except for Johnny, none of the men are criminals in the traditional sense.

Why: An excellent new mafia movies; from the opening scene, where the music keeps wonderful time with its surroundings in a factory, the film quickly takes you to Sicily and the where the plot begins quickly and relentlessly.

Alberto Sordi was a great actor, in both comedy and drama. He excels as the guy picked to do the “job”. The Don and his aide are excellent. The script is tight and the direction is perfect. A no-nonsense depiction of the Mafia”s world without embellishments. A must-see.

Why: This film just works!! Besides Woo’s top-notch action sequences, I was amazed by the great story. Chow Yun Fat is great as Mark and Leslie Cheung is very good as Kit. However, I believe the main focus should be on Ti Lung, who is fantastic as Ho. The importance of the story of loyalty and friendship cannot be overstated. Furthermore, the chemistry between the performers is so obvious that you can tell they had a lot of fun creating this new gangster movies. This is something I could see myself watching over and over again.

Why: Scarface is the best gangster movie of all time with Al Pacino’s spectacular performance as Tony Montana. The movie has so many violent moments with the shootouts and people getting cut up in pieces with a chainsaw but the scenes remain so iconic with everything in it.

The story was great with Tony Montana having his power rising and falling is one of the greatest storytelling in a gangster movie.  It is amazing and these were nice 2 hours and 50 minutes to watch.

Scarface 1983 - New Gangster Movies

Why: An incredible new gangster movies that are based on a true story. Director Mike Newell does an excellent job behind the screen but what’s on the screen is even better. The acting is brilliant all around, but this is Johnny Depp’s movie. Another amazing part of the movie is the story and the tense buildup it has. This is a powerful movie that should be viewed by any mob movie fan or just a movie fan in general.

Why: The general certainly delivers in terms of acting, direction, and entertainment value. It’s well-paced and funny, and all of the principal performers, especially Brendan Gleeson and Jon Voight, deliver terrific performances.

I would advise people to view these new gangster movies, but keep in mind that the man it depicts is not someone to be revered, but rather an example of the most heinous criminals Ireland has produced in recent years. “The devil has the best stories,” they say.

5- Kids Return (1996)

Release date: July 27, 1996 (Japan)

Director: Takeshi Kitano

Music by: Joe Hisaishi

Film series: Kids Return

Distributed by: Office Kitano

Why: The character’s actions are quite natural, and their live personality has a strong impact on me. It will acquaint you more than his previous efforts. The boxing match is breathtaking. The characters’ friendship is unforgettable. Because this music is a significant component of Takeshi’s work, I must pay tribute to Jô Hisaishi (the composer).

The music is enthralling and inspiring. In any case, it’s a powerful film about adolescence. This work entices me to seek out more of Takeshi’s work. Because, aside from Kurosawa, it’s one of my favorite Japanese directors.

There will be decent films as well as outstanding new gangster movies. However, only one Kid will ever return. I’m not going to say anything about the plot because I don’t want to give anything away. You have to see it for yourself to believe it. You’ll never forget it, and you’ll never be sad about it.

Kids Return 1996

Masaru (Ken Kaneko) and Shinji (Masanobu And) are two high school graduates who seek purpose and meaning in their lives by becoming yakuza lieutenants, one as a boxer and the other as a yakuza lieutenant, respectively. Joe Hisaishi composed the soundtrack, while Katsumi Yanagishima was the cinematographer.

Release date: October 6, 2006 (USA)

Director: Martin Scorsese

Box office: 291.5 million USD

Adapted from: Infernal Affairs

Distributed by: Warner Bros. Pictures

Awards: Academy Award for Best Picture

Why: It is not a film; it is a superb, fantastic, mind-blowing, and mind-blending masterpiece. This is the first time in my life that I have seen a film of this caliber. It’s simply incredible! We do know something about Nolan’s ability, direction, complexity, and thoughts. He did a fantastic job directing these new gangster movies.

The new gangster movies concept is that it hires the thoughts in dreams and creates the ideas in dreams. Psychologically, people do not remember their dreams for long periods, however, in this film, there are four levels to a dream.

Leonardo is one of my favorite actors. He did a good job in this film, and I’m not going to say much more about it because it will give too much away about the plot. So I advise you to go see this masterpiece and enjoy it.

The Departed 2006 - New Gangster Movies

However, as it becomes evident to both the mob and the police that there is a mole among them, Billy and Colin find themselves in jeopardy of being discovered and exposed to the enemy – and each must race to discover the identity of the other guy in time to rescue themselves. Why: Director Matteo Garrone has made a fantastic film. It’s a living example of the neorealist new mafia movies today. The film, which is based on Roberto Saviano’s popular novel of the same name, delves into the world of the Camorra, one of the most horrific criminal organizations in the world. The film immerses you in this inferno for more than two hours, allowing you to smell the blood, feel the misery of Naples’ slums, and experience the vicious circle of violence, despair, and injustice through simple realist cinematography, editing, and aesthetics, as well as the casting of actors who are mostly residents. It’s a work of art that you simply must see!

2- The Public Enemy (1931)

Release date: April 23, 1931 (USA)

Director: William A. Wellman

Box office: $557,000

Budget: $151,000 or $230,000

Based on: Beer and Blood; by John Bright; Kubec Glassman

Distributed by: Warner Bros. Pictures

Why: This is James Cagney’s fifth new gangster movies, The Public Enemy, as it still shocks today with its incredible violence and story of two best buddies who get into crime together. They mix in with some of the shadiest characters ever seen on screen, like Putty Nose and Paddy, both of who keep coming out with great line after great line, total 1930s style.

Of course, this has the grapefruit scene, but there are many great scenes, like when Cagney tells a bartender “eh, you’re Yella” and slaps him. If one hasn’t seen The Public Enemy, one really must!

The Public Enemy 1931

Plot: Tom Powers and Matt Doyle are close friends and fellow gangsters, with Tom’s straitlaced brother, Mike, and Matt’s straitlaced sister, Molly, disapproving of their lifestyles. From their teen years into young adulthood, Tom and Matt had an increasingly lucrative life bootlegging during the Prohibition era. But Tom, in particular, becomes more daring in his actions and obstinate and harsh in his treatment of those who disagree with him or cross him.

After one of Tom and Matt’s comrades dies in a strange accident, a rival bootlegging party led by Paddy Ryan identifies a hole within their gang. As a result of the gang fight, Paddy encourages Tom and Matt to go underground. Due to his personality, Tom, on the other hand, prefers to take matters into his own hands.

1- The Godfather (1972)

Director: Francis Ford Coppola

Story by: Mario Puzo

Featured song: Speak Softly Love

Awards: Academy Award for Best Picture

Why: A film that, without a doubt, does not require a review. The entire cast gives a commanding performance, all dialogues are already written in silver line, epic sequences, and superb acting by Marlon and Al Pacino.

I’d like to quote a moment in which Al Pacino visits two men in a hotel and decides to kill them both; that scene is majestic, it produces shivers, it’s scary and exhilarating, and it shows what an actor this man is. Greatest.

Plus, there’s the director, who is a psychopath!!! What a direction, everything is amazing, the class about these new mafia movies, you can’t complain about anything, watch it and learn about leadership, family, relationships, decision-making, and so on.

The Godfather 1972 - New Gangster Movies

Vito, on the other hand, refuses to sell drugs to a powerful and ruthless rival who requires Don’s help. Following that is a conflict between Vito’s fading old values and new ways, which could push Michael to do something he’s always avoided: wage a mafia war against all other mafia families, potentially splitting the Corleone family apart.
